420 Jars Site ver 4.0 coming soon to a computer near you

Posted by admin on 28 Oct 2006 | Tagged as: 420 Jars

We’re about waist deep into our new website. Version 4.0 (ish) – we are rebuilding from the ground up essentially. I’m pretty excited though. My web design skills have continued to improve and this one is my best yet. Definitely some Web 2.0 influence, but rounded corners, drop shadows and that other BS are kept to a minimum. Black continues to spread into all of our identity. I’m really excited for this site to be up. Having it up before Cannabis Cup is the goal. I think it should be up by the end of next week. We also committed to our friends at Gravitron , that we would rebuild their site. Boy does it need it. I have some ideas though. – Anyway, our new site will have some nice back end improvements and a much needed layout overhaul. It’s quite pretty.

today’s the day!

I’m so very excited today. Really I should be excited everyday. Everything in my life is awesome for the most part. But it’s hard to keep up a certain level of excitement on a day to day basis. Today however is super exciting. I’ve been waiting patiently (somewhat) for the new Apple Macbook Pro to come out. Intel dropped the new Core 2 Duo chip about 6 months ago and most PC laptops upgraded immediately. But not Apple. So I’ve been eagerly awaiting the upgrade. What’s really made it bad is the fact that we need a laptop for our trip to Amsterdam in 3 weeks. I would have been super upset if the upgraded chip didn’t come out and we had to get something without it. Or a PC, even worse! So every day I’ve been diligently scanning Gizmodo every day. Not that it isn’t a daily read for me anyway, but I was looking more than once a day. Waiting…well today I got up and there it was in all it’s glory. 39% faster, twice as much RAM and a bigger HD all for the same price as the one they were selling last week. So needless to say, there’s a big weight lifted off my shoulders. One less thing to worry about for the trip. Yah new computer! Yes. I’m a geek. :)

Ad for the Cannabis Cup

So sometimes things get done at the last minute around here. Actually more often than not. Although we’ve been getting better. The quality of our design has improved because we are taking more time. But…I can’t say I really took a lot of time on this piece. Due today, it was done this morning. In just under 4 hours. It looks good. Matt likes it. I’m happy with it. More or less. I’ve know about it for weeks now, but have spent a lot of time working on our other ads. This one sat on the back burner waiting for High Times to send us the art for the jars. Now did I need that art to get started? No. But that was the excuse I told myself. So I waited. But I knew that this morning would be the morning. This glorious Monday. So I awoke, made some tea and started pounding it out. It’s really what I’m best at. I like to think of myself a sort of design cowboy. Shooting from the hip. bang bang! So I just started making stuff. 4 hours later we have a pretty cool looking ad. The bar is low, believe me, so I guess it’ll be just fine. I’ve already thought about multiple things that I’d like to change, but it’s out of my hands now. I guess the lesson here is that I don’t need to wait on some other stoners to get started. I should have been laying this thing out weeks ago, but I was busy then. So I did it when I had to. That’s how our business works after all. Whether at the last minute or just in time. It’s all the same.

By the way, this is the ad that will be going into the Cannabis Cup Guide Book. We are a sponsor and the official stash jar. In case you didn’t already know that.

We design everything in-house. Well, I design everything, Matt just tells me if he likes it or not. Though, he’s had some really good ideas in the past. We work very well together. We each have our own specific strengths which compliment each other quite nicely. As a designer it’s a bit strange though. I am the client and the designer. Everything is to please me (and matt). So lately I’ve been trying to place both sides. Thinking of myself differently. Trying to ask the right questions about the designs that we use. What is the purpose? Who is the audience? Seems to be working though. We continue to grow busier. I can only imagine what Amsterdam and the holidays will bring. Buy a jar already!
